There is high demand for .ai domain names these days, thanks to the AI craze! The funny thing here is that the .ai TLD had nothing to do with artificial intelligence originally because it’s the country code TLD for a Caribbean island called Anguilla.
.AI is an expensive domain extension because the registry (government of Anguilla) sells it at a high wholesale price, and on top of that each registrar adds its own markup.
Another reason for the high price is that .ai domains must be registered for a minimum of two years.
The price varies from one registrar to another, so which ones sell it cheap?
Spaceship is the cheapest place to register a .ai domain name at the moment. The price is $69/year (or $138 for two years), and you get free Whois privacy with it.
I’ve recently started using Spaceship and I like the modern interface they have, although there are some bugs here and there (it’s a new website and they’re adding new features).
Namecheap is another good registrar where you can get a .ai domain at a low price ($80/year) with free Whois privacy. The renewal price is a bit higher ($90/year), but still much cheaper than other registrars like GoDaddy and 101domain.
I’ve been registering domains with Namecheap for many years and I have nothing bad to say about the service. They increase renewal prices from time to time, but so does every other registrar.
