What country owns the .ai TLD

The .ai top-level domain (TLD) is assigned to Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory (an island) in the Caribbean.

Up until January 15, 2025, the government of Anguilla managed the .ai registry, which has since been handed over to Identity Digital after an agreement between the two.

So technically, .ai is a country code TLD (ccTLD), although it is practically used more like a generic TLD since AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. This has become a very trendy TLD used by tech startups and websites, especially those related to AI technology.

Unlike other ccTLDs, .ai domains are open for registration by anyone anywhere in the world. You don’t have to be a citizen of Anguilla to register a .ai domain name, but you must use it in compliance with Anguilla’s laws.
