Why can’t you register .ai domains for one year only?

If you are trying to register a .ai domain name, you’ve probably noticed that you can’t register it for less than two years, but why is that?

Well, the registry of each TLD sets the rules for the registration and use of its domain names.

In case of .ai domains, the registry requires a minimum registration duration of two years, and this rule applies to all registrars. So, regardless where you buy it from, a .ai domain can only be registered for two years or more (up to 10).

This is just their business model. They probably prefer longer registration periods to secure more stable and predictable revenue streams. In other words, they might be more interested in serious buyers willing to make long-term commitments rather than one-off transactions.

This also helps reduce administrative overhead associated with frequent renewals.

I’ve written another article about where you can get a cheap .ai domain if you’re looking to register a new one.
